(1) What is an atomist? It is sometimes hard to understand what John Locke thought about ideas. (2) From your reading of Locke, do you think Locke thought (as did Malebranche) that ideas were entities in their own right? Provide evidence from the course readings to support your answer. When combined with his atomism, Locke’s views about ideas lead to the surprising conclusion that our ideas cannot reveal substances to us. (3) Why is is that? Locke himself was untroubled by the thought that our ideas do not reveal substances as they are in themselves. (4) Give one reason or argument for taking Locke’s view. (5) Based on the course readings, is Locke right to think as he does, or does a problem remain that he does not or cannot address?
